Aan het einde van Wereldoorlog II werden tientallen geallieerden door sluipschutters vanop de bergtop van Monte Cassino gedood. Elke grondaanval mislukte. Uiteindelijk besloten de geallieerden 1400 ton bommen op het klooster te gooien dat in 529 door de heilige Benedictus was gesticht. Prachtige muurschilderijen en tal van kunstwerken gingen daardoor verloren. Nadien bleek dat de Duitsers zich niet binnen de muren van het klooster hadden verschanst maar rondom het klooster. Daardoor duurde de slag van Monte Cassino voort van 15 januari tot 18 mei 1944.
