De Santa Maria in Via is een basiliek in Rome, gewijd aan Maria. Het achtervoegsel in via betekent aan de weg en slaat op de nabijgelegen Via Flaminia, waaraan de oorspronkelijke kerk lag.
Een eerste kapel op deze plaats dateert uit de negende eeuw. Op ongeveer dezelfde plaats stond in de dertiende eeuw het woonhuis van kardinaal Pietro Cappoci. Volgens de overlevering zou hier op 26 september 1256 een overstroming hebben voorgedaan, waarbij een schilderij met de beeltenis van Maria op het water dreef. Toen de kardinaal het portret uit het water viste, trok het water zich onmiddellijk terug. Paus Alexander IV verklaarde dat hier een wonder was geschied en gelaste de bouw van een kapel. Deze kapel is nu de eerste kapel aan de rechterhand, na binnenkomst in de kerk.
