De galerie werd opgericht in een eigen gebouw dankzij de bescherming van de lokale jurist en verzamelaar, Giuseppe Ricci Oddi. Het gebouw werd in 1931 geconstrueerd op basis van ontwerpen van Giulio Ulisse Arata op grond grenzend aan een ontheiligd klooster, geschonken door de gemeente. De collecties zijn in de loop der decennia uitgebreid. Het museum heeft tegenwoordig ongeveer 400 werken van veel lokale, voornamelijk Italiaanse, en enkele internationale schilders.
