Het werd geopend op 27 september 2001, met de opening van de nieuwe dubbelsporige lijn tussen Bordighera en Imperia, die een afwijking is van de lijn Genua–Ventimiglia, vooral in tunnel gebouwd. Het nieuwe station verving een oud pittoresk station aan een enkelsporige lijn die langs de kust liep.
Het stationsgebouw van Sanremo bevat een ticketzaal, wachtruimte, informatiekantoor, kiosk en bar. Het entreegebouw is verbonden met de perrons die in een tunnel zijn gebouwd door een lange gang, uitgerust met een bewegende loopband. De reistijd is ongeveer 10 minuten. Het station heeft twee perrons die met een onderdoorgang zijn verbonden.
