Het Piazza Pretoria is in de zestiende eeuw aangelegd om plaats te bieden aan de maniëristische Fontana Pretoria. In de volksmond wordt ze Fontana della Vergogna (Fontein van de Schande) genoemd, vanwege de vele naakte beelden van de fontein.
De inwoners van Palermo waren dan weer van oordeel dat het geld beter had kunnen besteed worden dan aan zo’n prestigeproject. Ze verdachten de bestuurders van corruptie en vriendjespolitiek. Het plein, de Piazza Pretorio, wordt door vele Palermitanen overigens nog steeds de Piazza della Vergogna genoemd, een blijvend verwijt naar de diepgewortelde corruptie die tot laat in de twintigste eeuw de lokale politiek in Palermo kenmerkte.
