La Piazza Pretoria fue construida en el siglo XVI para albergar la manierista Fontana Pretoria. Se la llama popularmente Fontana della Vergogna (Fuente de la Vergüenza), debido a las numerosas estatuas desnudas que contiene.
Los habitantes de Palermo opinaron que el dinero podría haberse gastado mejor que en un proyecto de tanto prestigio. Sospechaban de corrupción y amiguismo a los directores. La plaza, la Piazza Pretorio, todavía es llamada Piazza della Vergogna por muchos palermitanos, un reproche duradero a la corrupción profundamente arraigada que caracterizó la política local en Palermo hasta finales del siglo XX.
