Die Piazza Pretoria wurde im 16. Jahrhundert erbaut, um die manieristische Fontana Pretoria zu beherbergen. Wegen der vielen nackten Statuen im Brunnen wird er im Volksmund auch Fontana della Vergogna (Brunnen der Schande) genannt.
Die Einwohner von Palermo waren der Meinung, dass das Geld besser für ein so prestigeträchtiges Projekt hätte angelegt werden können. Sie verdächtigten die Direktoren der Korruption und Vetternwirtschaft. Der Platz, Piazza Pretorio, wird von vielen Einwohnern Palermos immer noch Piazza della Vergogna genannt , eine dauerhafte Zurechtweisung für die tief verwurzelte Korruption , die bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts die lokale Politik in Palermo prägte.
