In 2022 was Nigeria het decor van een epische zondvloed. 662 mensen kwamen om, 2,5 miljoen raakten ontheemd, 200.000 huizen werden vernield, net als talloze hectares landbouwgrond. De schade liep op tot 6,6 miljard dollar.
Dat roept vragen op. Over hoe het land zich kan verweren tegen die cyclische rampspoed. Hoe je radeloze Nigerianen ontraadt om naar Libië te reizen, daar in een bootje te stappen om aan te spoelen op het Italiaanse eiland Lampedusa. Hoe je de grootste Afrikaanse olieproducent ervan overtuigt de olie in de grond te laten om verdere klimaatchaos te voorkomen (Nigeria tekende in november nog een olie- en gasdeal met Saudi-Arabië). Waar het geld vandaan moet komen om in de plaats daarvan in te zetten op zonne-energie (zon is er in overvloed, het geld ontbreekt).
