In Lochem treft u een omgeving aan met bossen, heuvels, kastelen en buitenhuizen. Zo een buitenhuis is "Het Huis Ampsen". Documenten uit 1103 schrijven reeds over dit in de 16de eeuw in vlammen opgegane kasteel. Spoedig daarna in 1543 werd het weer opgebouwd, waarbij het werd uitgebreid en aangepast aan de toenmalige stijl. Lochem heeft in 1233 zijn stadsrechten verworven en werd in 1340 ommuurd. Opvallend is de St. Gudula uit 1478, die op de markt staat, het is een laat-gotische hallenkerk met ingebouwde toren en beneden bekleed met tufsteen. De hoornblazers zijn er nog steeds actief.
