De Braakman was vroeger een zeearm maar werd in 1952 afgesloten, gelukkig net voor de watersnood die Nederland het jaar nadien zou teisteren. Vandaag is de Braakman het recreatie- en natuurgebied bij uitstek van Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Er zijn zowel bossen als waterplassen, met gelegenheid tot wandelen, fietsen en watersporten, en verder ook tennisbanen, een speeltuin en een camping. In en om de noordelijke Braakmanbossen treft de liefhebber onder meer zeldzame orchideeën en minder voorkomende vogelsoorten aan.
