The Braakman used to be an estuary but was closed in 1952, fortunately just before the flood that would ravage the Netherlands the following year. Today, the Braakman is the recreation and nature reserve par excellence of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. There are both forests and ponds, with opportunities for hiking, cycling and water sports, as well as tennis courts, a playground and a campsite. In and around the northern Braakman forests, the enthusiast will find, among other things, rare orchids and less common bird species.
