De Moerdijk en de Moerdijkbrug zijn een begrip voor Nederland. Wie kent niet de uitdrukking "boven of onder de Moerdijk". De uitdrukking boven/beneden de Moerdijk is ongeveer synoniem aan boven/beneden de grote rivieren en houdt verband met het feit dat Moerdijk vanouds de locatie was waar de belangrijke noord-zuidverbinding van Zuid-Holland naar Noord-Brabant het Hollandsch Diep overstak. Het insinueert ook een verschil in "gedrag", "cultuur" of "mentaliteit" boven en onder deze fyisische grens.
