Pal langs de Geul ligt Kasteel Den Halder. Het is een versterkte woontoren die destijds tegen de middeleeuwse stadsmuur lag. De oorsprong van de toren stamt dan ook uit de veertiende eeuw, toen Dirk IV van Valkenburg begon met de
herbouw van de stadsmuur.
Later werd het omgebouwd naar een woontoren, wat inhield dat er een verdieping op kwam en hoektorens werden toegevoegd. Een deel van het oorspronkelijke landgoed is nu ingericht als stadspark
