De term stinsenplant is afgeleid van het Friese woord ‘stins’ en dat betekent weer ‘stenen huis’. Kortom: het zijn planten die bij stenen huizen groeien. Nu telt Nederland veel stenen huizen, maar toch groeien bij al die huizen weinig tot geen stinsenplanten. Dat komt doordat deze planten vroeger een speeltje van de adel waren; zij pronkten graag met exotische planten uit verre oorden. Dus zie je ze veel bij kastelen en buitenplaatsen.
