In 1632 wordt de filosoof Spinoza in Amsterdam geboren uit joods Portugese ouders, in de buurt van het Waterlooplein waar ook een gedenkteken staat. Hij had een enorme invloed op denkers als Hegel, Nietsche en Einstein. Na zijn verblijf in Amsterdam vindt Spinoza zijn eerst onderdak in Tulpenburg, aan de weg naar Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, in 1660. Daarna vertrekt hij naar Rijnsburg en trekt in bij de chirurg Herman Hooman. Die woning staat nu bekend als het Spinozahuisje. In het najaar van 1669 verhuist hij naar Den Haag. Hij woont korte tijd op de Veerkade, waarna hij verhuist naar de Paviljoensgracht, het huis van schilder Hendrik van der Spyk. Hier zal hij tot aan zijn dood aan de tering in 1677 blijven wonen. Daar staat nu nog ziijn standbeeld.
