Hulst profileert zich als de "meest Vlaamse stad" van Zeeland. Vooral de Bourgondische levensstijl van de stad Hulst trekt veel Belgische toeristen. Hulst maakte formeel tot 1648 (Vrede van Münster) met de rest van Zeeuws-Vlaanderen deel uit van het Graafschap Vlaanderen en was een dochterstad van Gent. Hulst is er trots op genoemd te worden in het middeleeuwse Van den vos Reynaerde. Het feit wordt gememoreerd met een standbeeld voor Reintje. Hulst is lid van de Nederlandse Vereniging van Vestingsteden
