Hulst si profila come la "città più fiamminga" della Zelanda. Soprattutto lo stile di vita borgognone della città di Hulst attira molti turisti belgi. Hulst fece formalmente parte della contea delle Fiandre fino al 1648 (Pace di Münster) insieme al resto della Zelanda Fiamminga ed era una città sorella di Gand. Hulst è orgogliosa di essere citata nel medioevale Van den vos Reynaerde. Il fatto è ricordato con una statua per Reintje. Hulst è membro dell'Associazione Olandese delle Città Fortificate.
