Het Nederlands fietseiland Texel werd gekozen door National Geographic als het 12de mooiste eiland van de wereld uit een lijst van 111. De eerste uit de lijst waren de Faeröer Eilanden.
Texel werd ook als woonplaats gekozen door Jan Wolkers die op 19 oktober 2007 overleed op 81 jarige leeftijd. Hij kwam er wonen in 1981 in de buurtschap Westermient.
