Het ligt ten zuidoosten van Franeker, tussen Baijum en Oosterlittens. De dorpskern ligt ingeklemd tussen de N384 Franeker - Wieuwerd en de Franekervaart. Winsum kent met ook een industrieterrein een relatief gevarieerd bedrijfsleven en veel werkgelegenheid.In 2021 telde het dorp 1.025 inwoners. Onder het dorp vallen ook de buurtschappen Schildum en Weakens. Aan de zuidoostelijke kant ligt de Meamerter Polder waarin de voormalige buurtschappen Langwerd en Memerd lagen.
