Het ligt ten zuidwesten van de stad Leeuwarden en ten noorden van Sneek, tussen Winsum en Baard. Bij het dorp komen de Franekervaart en de Bolswardertrekvaart samen, dat ook wel Het Kruiswater wordt genoemd en waaraan een camping is gelegen. De dorpskern ligt even ten westen van de N384.In 2021 telde het dorp 415 inwoners. Onder het dorp vallen ook de buurtschappen Schrins, Wammerd en Wieuwens. Ook het enige overgebleven huis van de voormalige buurtschap Langwerd valt onder Oosterlittens.
