Het ligt ten oosten van Nijega en ten noordwesten van Drachten. Aan het noordelijke dorpsgebied ligt het meer De Leijen, waarvanuit de Opeindervaart loopt, die door de dorpskern loopt en uiteindelijk overgaat in het Nieuwe Kanaal en de Burmaniasloot.In 2021 telde het dorp 1.745 inwoners. Onder het dorp vallen ook de buurtschappen De Kletten en Nijtap en de buurt Het Zwartveen in het noordelijke buitengebied, ten noorden van de N31.
