Het ligt ten noordwesten van Dokkum, ten zuidoosten van Brantgum en ten zuiden van Hantum. De dorpskern ligt aan de Hantumerweg ten oosten van de Hantumervaart en ten noorden van de Paesens. In 2021 telde het dorp 70 inwoners. Onder het dorp valt ook de buurtschap Lutkelaard.De dorpen Hiaure, Hantum, Hantumeruitburen en Hantumhuizen worden samen ook wel de 4H-dorpen genoemd en vormen een gezamenlijke gemeenschap.
