Het ligt ten noorden van Joure en ten zuiden van Akmarijp. De bewoning van het dorp bestaat uit losgelegen huizen en boerderijen. In 2021 telde het dorp 65 inwoners. Het wordt soms ook een buurtschap genoemd.Van oorsprong was Snikzwaag een vaartdorp, waarbij de bewoning voornamelijk over het water was te bereiken, via de Snikzwaagstervaart. Van die oorsprong is sinds de tweede helft van de 20e eeuw nog weinig te zien, al is de bewoning van de kern vooral nog aan één kant te vinden van de weg.
