Het ligt ten noordwesten van Makkum, ten westen van Wons en ten zuidwesten van Zurich, iets ten zuiden van de plek waar de Afsluitdijk de Friese kust bereikt. De dorpskern ligt dicht bij het IJsselmeer en aan de Kornwerdervaart.Op de Afsluitdijk ligt het dorp Kornwerderzand, dat ontstaan is op een werkeiland op de zandplaat die vernoemd was naar het dorp Cornwerd. In 2021 telde het dorp 80 inwoners. Onder het dorp vallen ook de buurtschappen Hiddum, Houw en Sotterum.
