Het ligt ten noordoosten van Franeker en ten noordwesten van Leeuwarden, tussen Minnertsga en Sint Annaparochie, en niet ver van de Waddenzee. Door het dorpsgebied stromen onder andere de Koude Vaart, Het Kanaal, Kleine Blikvaart en de Blikvaart. Door het dorp zelf loopt de N393. Het dorp is bekend als startplaats van het Jabikspaad, een pelgrimsroute in het noorden van Nederland.
