Het ligt ten zuidwesten van Drachten en ten noordwesten van Beetsterzwaag. Aan de zuidoostkant van het dorpsgebied loopt de A7 en aan de zuidwestkant de Kromme Gat. Even ten noorden van die laatste ligt de waterplas Boornbergummerpetten.In 2021 telde het dorp 1.775 inwoners. Onder het dorp valt ook deel van de buurtschap Galhoek. Het dorp werkt op veel vlakken samen met het naburige Kortehemmen, met wie het ook de buurtschap Galhoek wordt gedeeld.
