Het ligt ongeveer 11 km ten zuidoosten van Dokkum, 3 km ten oost-zuidoosten van Westergeest en ongeveer 2,5 km ten noordoosten van Triemen. De dorpskern ligt net ten noorden van het Stroobossertrekvaart. In het noordelijke dorpsgebied loopt de Nieuwe Zwemmer.Het vormt een eenheid met Wijgeest, een buurtschap die in het noordoostelijke verlengde is gelegen van de dorpskern. Doordat het helemaal vergroeid is met elkaar wordt soms alleen nog de noordelijke aftakking van de De Wygeast als eigen plaats gezien.
