Het ligt ten zuiden van Folsgare, ten zuidwesten van Sneek en ten noordwesten van IJlst. De dorpskern ligt voornamelijk aan de oostoever van de Wijmerts. Het kent daaraan ook twee kleine havens.In 2021 telde het dorp 455 inwoners. Onder het dorp valt een deel van het dorp annex buurtschap Nijezijl en verder de buurtschappen Draaisterhuizen en Piekezijl .
