Het ligt ten noordwesten van Dokkum, tussen Bornwird en Brantgum. De dorpskern ligt aan de N356. Door de ligging werkt het zowel samen met Raard en Bornwird als Brantgum en Waaxens. In 2021 telde het dorp Foudgum 75 inwoners.De plaats werd mogelijk in de 12e eeuw vermeld als Foldenheim in een kopie van een document uit 944. Maar helemaal zeker is het niet dat daarmee ook deze plaats werd bedoeld. In 1422 werd de plaats in ieder geval vermeld als Foldeghum, in 1449 als Foudtgum, in 1472 als Fouldeghem, in 1482 als Foldegum en Foldgum, in 1487 als Foedegum, in 1493 als Foltkum en in 1505 als Foudghum.
