Kom rondkijken en genieten van de mooie natuur en de grazende schapen op natuurfort Batterij onder Brakel. Het fort ligt tussen Brakel en Loevestein vlakbij de Waal langs een rustige fietsroute. Het fortterrein is vrij toegankelijk. Er zijn geen publieksactiviteiten in dit fort.
Batterijen onder Brakel toen
Dit batterijfort ten zuidwesten van Brakel werd gebouwd tussen 1879 en 1884 aan de zuidelijke Waaldijk. Het fort sloot de toegang van de Waal, de uiterwaarden en de Waaldijk af. Samen met het tweelingfort de Batterij Pouderoijen vormde het fort de verdediging van Fort Loevestein en de vesting Woudrichem. Beide batterijen werden berucht vanwege de tijdrovende bouw. Dit werd veroorzaakt door de zwakke ondergrond, waardoor ze een paar keer spectaculair verzakten.
