This battery fort southwest of Brakel was built between 1879 and 1884 on the southern Waaldijk. The fort closed off the entrance to the Waal, the floodplains and the Waaldijk. Together with the twin fort the Battery Pouderoijen, the fort formed the defense of Fort Loevestein and the fortress Woudrichem. Both batteries became notorious for their time-consuming construction. This was caused by the weak subsoil, which caused them to sag spectacularly a few times.
