Ooit gebouwd om de ontsluiting van het Land van Maas en Waal richting Tiel te verbeteren. En doordat scheepvaart op de Waal steeds drukker werd, kon het pontveer Tiel –Wamel niet worden uitgebreid. In juni 1974 werd de brug geopend en raakte al snel bekend als de brug van ‘niks naar nergens’. Een geplande doortrekking van de weg naar Eindhoven kwam er niet. Tot 1996 is er tol geheven. De brug is de enige in Nederland die dezelfde constructie heeft als de Morandibrug in Genua, die in 2018 instortte. Volgens deskundigen is de tuibrug-beton-constructie in prima staat!
