Einst gebaut, um die Erschließung des Landes zwischen Maas und Waal in Richtung Tiel zu verbessern. Und da der Schiffsverkehr auf der Waal immer dichter wurde, konnte die Fähre Tiel – Wamel nicht erweitert werden. Im Juni 1974 wurde die Brücke eröffnet und wurde schnell bekannt als die Brücke von 'nirgends nach nirgendwo'. Eine geplante Verlängerung der Straße nach Eindhoven fand nicht statt. Bis 1996 wurde Maut erhoben. Die Brücke ist die einzige in den Niederlanden, die dieselbe Konstruktion hat wie die Morandi-Brücke in Genua, die 2018 einstürzte. Laut Experten ist die Kabelbrücken-Beton-Konstruktion in einwandfreiem Zustand!
