Rijke kooplieden uit Amsterdam bouwden in de 17e en 18e eeuw grote buitenplaatsen in het Gooi. Vanaf het einde van de 19e eeuw bezochten veel dagjesmensen het Gooi. Met de komst van het toerisme ontwikkelde de boerderij van de oude buitenplaats Oud Valkeveen zich vanaf ca. 1880 tot een uitspanning, nu nog steeds te bezoeken als Speelpark Oud Valkeveen.
