Een lange geschiedenis van lange bruggen
Op deze plek ligt al eeuwenlang een brug, maar al twee keer is de brug afgebroken in oorlogstijd om de vijand af te slaan.
De eerste (houten) brug is in 1572 gebouwd. Een kleine driekwart eeuw later werd de houten brug weer opgebouwd, in de periode zonder brug diende de herbergier van het Rechthuis ook als veerman.
De volgende houten brug stond er nog geen veertig jaar, want die werd in 1672 onder bevel van Willem III afgebroken om de Fransen tegen te houden.
De volgende brug werd zwaar beschadigd door een stadsbrand in 1781. Daarna volgden nog twee bruggen.
De huidige stenen brug, Prinses Irenebrug, is uit 1939.
