Bij dit kerkhof lag omstreeks 1300 een kerk met boerderijen. Het kerkhof was, naast de begraafplaats in Naarden, aanvankelijk het enige kerkhof in het Gooi. Na de Reformatie moest de Katholieke kerk verdwijnen. Het kerkhof bleef een bedevaartoord. Nog steeds gaat op de eerste zondag na Sint Jansdag op 24 juni de Sint-Jansprocessie vanuit de Sint Jansbasiliek in Laren naar deze begraafplaats.
