In 1350 was het oude Naarden tijdens de Hoekse en Kabeljauwse twisten met de grond gelijk gemaakt. In het huidige landschap lag deze stad ongeveer 2 km noordoostelijk van de huidige stad, nu in het Gooimeer. Vóór de aanleg van de Afsluitdijk was het water van de voormalige Zuiderzee krachtig en bij stormen werd steeds een deel van de kust weggeslagen. Daarom was het in 1350 voor Naarden veiliger om de nieuwe stad landinwaarts te bouwen.
