Voor zandwinning zijn in het Gooi grote gebieden afgegraven. De erfgooiersorganisatie Stad en Lande van Gooiland sloot contacten af om deze grond af te mogen afgraven om zo geld te verdienen en betere weidegrond te krijgen. De Kalkzandsteenfabriek 'Rijsbergen' gebruikte zand uit de groeve Oostermeent. Na het afgraven bleven steile wanden staan waar oeverzwaluwen een goede nestmogelijkheid in vonden.
