De voormalige Vliegbasis Venlo-Herongen werd tussen oktober 1940 en maart 1941 aangelegd als Duitse Fliegerhorst op de Groote Heide bij Venlo en kreeg de naam Fliegerhorst Venlo.Sinds 1913 lag op deze locatie al een bescheiden Nederlands vliegkamp. In 1940 werd dat door de Duitsers uitgebouwd tot een complex van in totaal 1075 hectare op het grondgebied van de Nederlandse gemeente Venlo en de Duitse gemeentes Nettetal en Straelen. Het complex met drie startbanen was uitgerust met de modernste veiligheidsinstallaties, radioapparatuur en nachtverlichting met 2000 lampen. Door de Fliegerhorst liep een netwerk van wegen met een totale lengte van 48 kilometer tussen meer dan honderd hangaars, onderkomens, werkplaatsen, casino's , voetbal- en tennisvelden.
