La ex Base Aerea di Venlo-Herongen fu costruita tra ottobre 1940 e marzo 1941 come Fliegerhorst tedesco sulla Groote Heide vicino a Venlo e prese il nome di Fliegerhorst Venlo. Dal 1913 in questa posizione esisteva già un modesto campo d'aviazione olandese. Nel 1940 fu ampliato dai tedeschi in un complesso di un totale di 1075 ettari sul territorio del comune olandese di Venlo e dei comuni tedeschi di Nettetal e Straelen. Il complesso, con tre piste di decollo, era dotato delle più moderne installazioni di sicurezza, attrezzature radio e illuminazione notturna con 2000 lampade. Attraverso il Fliegerhorst correva una rete di strade con una lunghezza totale di 48 chilometri tra più di cento hangar, alloggi, officine, casinò, campi da calcio e da tennis.
