Kasteel Schaesberg

Long ago, Schaesberg Castle was one of the most beautiful castles in the region. Built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries on a medieval predecessor, it was the pride of the Lords of Schaesberg for centuries. An example of architecture from the Maasland Renaissance. Here they lived, dined and held meetings on topics that would change the map of the Landen van Overmaas.
In the eighteenth century, when hunger and poverty prevailed and the infamous Bokkenrijders committed their crimes, members of that gang were locked up in the cellars. The castle farm continued to be used by generations of farmers, but was demolished in the late 1960s.
