De natuurlijke verhoging hier in het landschap was voor de stichter van het Lunterse Buurtbos (notaris van den Ham) einde 19e eeuw de ideale plek om een rustpunt met een theehuisje te plaatsen. Door de jaren heen groeide dit bouwwerkje met de bomen mee tot de uitkijktoren zoals deze er nu staat.
De Koepel is nu een Rijksmonument en de laatste restauratie vond plaats in 2009.
Beklimmen van de toren kan van Pasen t/m de Herfstvakantie van 14:00u-17:00 u (niet op maandag)
Het uitzicht is (bij helder weer) zeer de moeite waard!
