Flevoland is de jongste van de twaalf provincies en bestaat uit de Noordoostpolder, Oostelijk Flevoland en Zuidelijk Flevoland, alle ontstaan door drooglegging van delen van de voormalige Zuiderzee.
De nieuwe polders kregen in het begin hoofdzakelijk een agrarische bestemming.
De Noordoostpolder is voornamelijk bedoeld en ingericht als landbouwgebied. Oostelijk Flevoland is ingericht op 25% niet-landbouwgrond en Zuidelijk Flevoland op 50% niet-landbouwgrond. Vooral Zuidelijk Flevoland is bedoeld om de bevolkingsgroei in de dichtbevolkte Randstad op te vangen.
De drie polders hebben landschappelijk veel overeenkomsten. Het zijn open agrarische gebieden, afgewisseld met boerderijen en hun windsingels, als groene eilanden in het landschap. De wegen zijn lang en recht, vaak geflankeerd door majestueuze bomenrijen. Je waant je in een ‘Mondriaans’ landschap, met grootse vergezichten, strakke lijnen en scherpe contrasten.
