Oude-Tonge heeft zwaar geleden onder de watersnood van 1953. In de nacht van 31 januari op 1 februari kwamen hier 305 mensen om het leven.
Na de watersnoodramp schonk het Zweedse Rode Kruis een aantal houten woningen. Deze woningen zijn destijds geplaatst aan de Julianastraat in Oude-Tonge.
In 2007 is een groot aantal van deze woningen gesloopt, echter daarvoor zijn door de plaatselijke wooncorporatie woningen en appartementen in Zweedse stijl teruggeplaatst.
