Het meer is ontstaan na de zandwinning ten behoeve van de aanleg van de Grebbelinie en autosnelweg A12. Oorspronkelijk was het gebied een grote zandverstuiving en dat kwam weer goed van pas toen men hier in 1972 deze plas verder uitdiepte en er een mooi strand met zwemwater van werd gemaakt. Het gebied wordt door meer dan 600.000 mensen per jaar bezocht. Het is niet alleen in trek op warme zomerdagen, maar ook in de winter wanneer het meer bevroren is.
Het recreatiegebied is 60ha groot.
