Der See entstand nach der Sandgewinnung für den Bau der Grebbelinie und der Autobahn A12. Ursprünglich war das Gebiet eine große Sanddüne, und das kam 1972 gut in Gebrauch, als man dieses Gewässer weiter vertiefte und einen schönen Strand mit Schwimmwasser schuf. Das Gebiet wird von mehr als 600.000 Menschen pro Jahr besucht. Es ist nicht nur an warmen Sommertagen beliebt, sondern auch im Winter, wenn der See zugefroren ist. Das Erholungsgebiet ist 60 ha groß.
