Het natuurgebied op en rond de Bemelerberg is zo bijzonder dat Stichting Limburgs Landschap al in 1942 besloot dit gebied te beschermen.
Het was en is nog steeds de enige Nederlandse groeiplaats van de berggamander. Die traditie leeft voort en ook andere flora en fauna, zoals wilde orchideeën en zeldzame vlinders, vonden hier hun plek.
Bij het beheer wordt hulp ingeroepen van het Mergellandschaap. Die begraast behendig de heuvels en houdt zo het landschap open. Als wandelaar geniet je van spectaculaire uitzichten over bloemrijke graslanden en indrukwekkende mergelwanden met ingangen naarde mergelgroeves.
Deze onderaardse ruimtes zijn ontstaan door de winning van mergel en worden tegenwoordig alleen nog door vleermuizen gebruikt.
