Al in het jaar 1150 is er sprake van een kasteel in Born, vlakbij de locatie van de huidige ruïne. Begin 17e eeuw raakte de burcht in verval, waarna de familie De Leerodt in 1662 startte met de bouw van een nieuw kasteel. Helaas is het gebouw, dat destijds werd bewoond door de familie Barbou van Roosteren, in 1930 verwoest door een fatale brand. In de tuinen rondom de ruïne is een prachtig dierenpark opgebouwd, waar bezoekers vele diersoorten kunnen bewonderen.
Kasteelruïne Born is een van de verwonderlocaties op de Route vol Verwondering.
