De Kraaienestersluis dateert al uit de late 14de eeuw. Het is een van de drie sluizen die van het turfwinningsgebied naar de transportweg Vecht voeren. De sluis leidt naar de Tienhovensche Vaart, die in de 14de eeuw werd gegraven als grenssloot tussen de ontginningsgebieden van Tienhoven en Breukelen. Met de start van de turfwinning in de 17de eeuw werd de sloot als turfvaart gebruikt. Het vormt nu de grens tussen de Loosdrechtse plassen en de diepgelegen droogmakerij Polder Bethune. Het oostelijk deel van het kanaal vormde lange tijd de grens tussen Holland en Utrecht. In 1650 werd een sluiswachtershuis ernaast gebouwd waar ook tol werd geheven. Dit pand was ook herberg en rechthuis, vroeger een veel voorkomende combinatie van functies. In 2002 is de sluis gerestaureerd en zelfbedienbaar gemaakt. Iets verderop ligt Fort Tienhoven (1848-1850).
