Op 15 augustus 1942 werden op deze plaats vijf Nederlanders door de Duitsers gefusilleerd.
In de vroege ochtend van die dag stierven Otto van Limburg Stirum, Alexander Schimmelpenninck van der Oye, Robert Baelde, Christoffel Bennekers en Willem Ruys voor het vuurpeloton.
Het was een represaillemaatregel wegens een mislukte aanval op een Duitse trein.
